Disclosure: I was given a $500 gift card from Izea on behalf of their client, Sears, to participate in their campaign and “grant a wish” for someone, then to share the experiences shopping at the retail store. There is also a contest you can enter with details below for me to grant perhaps one or more of your wishes. From my perspective, I see this as getting paid to provide my feedback more then getting paid to write a blog post, but as we have seen over the last few days with regards to Chris Brogan and his involvement in the K-Mart campaign, everyone has their own perspective.
The spirit of the Sears “Don’t Just Give a Gift, Grant a Wish” campaign is laudable, and also very difficult to live up to IMHO – giving a gift is easy, a wish is really, really deep. I was able to choose whether to grant a wish for myself, for someone else or for a charity. Given the fact this was going to be a light Christmas at best, I wanted to do something special for my wife, Kristie – we do a bit of charity work throughout the year as well as several donations, so I felt its time to do something nice for her. (video re-enactment forthcoming
I believe the reason I was selected for the campaign is that
The program ‘rules’ are simple, Sears provides a $500 gift card to me, I go to one of their stores, then, after the shopping trip, I post about our experiences (which wasn’t all that good as you will soon read). Now here is the part that makes it cool for you. I hopefully am granting one of your wishes. Izea, who is running the promotion for Sears, is also going to be picking a winner of another $500 grant a wish package (instructions for entering below, but first a bit about our shopping trip and our experience with Sears).
For starters, I should point out that Sears is not one of the stores I would shop for Christmas. For me, Sears is top of mind when thinking power tools, appliances and car repairs even – but not clothes, electronics or even furniture. In fact, most of our furniture in our house we have purchased off of Craigslist or a second-hand store, but it wasn’t my wish, it was Kristie’s, so I thought I would just ask her instead of worrying about it and really felt grateful to Ted for inviting me.
Of course, Kristie’s first response was that she wanted a trip to Paris (where I just came from). Then she said, well we aren’t doing Christmas gifts this year so it doesn’t really matter. After a bit of haggling over what I meant by the word ‘wish’ (fix the world, solve for hunger, get a big sponsor for Social Media Club so we could hire an executive director etc..) I finally conveyed it had to be physically something I could buy – in other words a gift. After a few minutes she finally said what I knew she wanted, a Karaoke machine so she could let out her inner chartreuse. Of course, if she was going to get a Karaoke machine, I needed noise canceling headphones to be part of her wish
The other big thing she has been trying to get for the past year was a Wii.
So we had our shopping list set up and after Social Media Club hosted a Social Media Breakfast, we set out to Sears at Aventura mall in North Miami.
I grew up here in Miami (where we are visiting for Social Media Club events and also to spend some holiday time with my 92 year old grandfather) so I knew generally where it was, but I wanted to be sure. So we searched Sears on the Google Maps app on our iPhone. There were actually too many listings for Sears in North Miami to easily find it so we went to the sears.com Web site, which was actually optimized for mobile. The only complaint with the mobile site is that they need to have the store’s addresses linked to a mapping service, because we had to manually transfer the address into the map app which made it a bit harder.
The one unfortunate thing about the timing of this campaign is that we are only two weeks away from Christmas and ended up heading to one of the busiest malls in the United States on a Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Needless to say – the mall was packed. In fact, parking was so tough we had to use the valet service after searching for nearly 30 minutes, but once that was all sorted out, we headed to Sears with the gift card in hand and our simple shopping list at the ready (though I still have no idea which Wii games we really want other than Rockband – see the musical theme of this wish?).
Walking into the store, we noticed the new signage highlighting the campaign “Don’t just give a gift, grant a wish” – but the rest of the store felt the same as it did when I used to shop here with my grandparents. Even the Christmas yard decorations setup felt a bit less then modern. I guess the best word to describe it is that it felt ‘dated’. In fact, when talking to my aunt about it later, she said “Sears has always been the same, they never change”. For some people this is good, for me, this is not so good. Reminds me of the many ad campaigns such as “this isn’t your parent’s XYZ any more” except in this case, it still is.
Anyway, we headed straight for the electronics department and found the karaoke machines. We found the one Kristie wanted on sale at a great price, only $90 down from $150. Though we couldn’t find the extra microphones or music, but that’s another story.
Knowing we had more shopping to do, we asked a nearby sales associate if there were shopping baskets available. Her English was poor and she couldn’t understand the question, even after asking it several times – this is something I have become used to in Miami retail, and while unfortunate is not uncommon – I wish I spoke Spanish fluently, but I don’t. Realizing there weren’t shopping carts available and not wanting to carry it all over the store, we left the karaoke machine and headed a few aisles over to the video games where…
We didn’t find any Wii’s… so we found another sales associate who told us they were sold out and didn’t know when they were getting it in. Bummer, but this has often been the case with Nintendo for the past year plus, so that is not entirely Sears’ fault. In fact, when we got back I ran across this article about November being the biggest month of video game console sales ever.
At this point, we said, ok, lets go check out the noise canceling headphones – unfortunately the choices were limited and I didn’t see the headphones I wanted. We did find something suitable though, but then I couldn’t get it off the rack (it was locked in somehow). With these frustrations mounting, we realized we should just wait to get the Wii from sears.com and since we had to fly home anyway, should get the karaoke machine online too. After all, why spend $25 to check an extra bag? or waste the time going back when you can just order online and get free shipping.
Of course, in going to look at buying it online, they are only offering it in one of those silly packages designed to make you buy games you don’t really want – really not very good marketing on their point (Nintendo’s) in building a good relationship with folks like me – we are seriously considering a PS3 now, but I digress…
While walking out of the electronics department to check out the rest of the store to see if we would be inspired, we did see a great deal on a Panasonic cordless phone for the house, to replace the broken ones we have been using.
The electronics department was situated next to the appliances and our eyes moved to a beautiful stove that reminded us of that really cool and expensive French one we saw elsewhere, but this was made by Kenmore and was about half the price of the one we saw previously. If we owned our house and had a few thousand extra dollars, we might have been tempted to purchase it as our current stove is relatively small. Since we rent our flat and are paying down our debt instead of making major purchases, we set aside the big wish.
After a quick lunch break, Kristie decided she wanted to use some of her wish to buy some gifts for my nephews, so we went back to the store for round two. After searching both floors of the entire store, we finally found the toy department, by the power tools and the weight lifting equipment. Unfortunately there really was not much of a selection, just an aisle or so with a good percentage of that being toy Craftsmen power tools. They also had a small display of Hasbro board games, many of which were priced at $29.99, essentially $5-15 more than the same games cost at other stores. While it was ‘free’ money to us, there is still a sense of wanting to find value so we passed.
Kristie also needed a pair of socks (because she forgot them at home) so we picked those up while there.
So all in all, the Sears shopping experience hasn’t changed much since I was a kid – in the case of the floors, shelves and overall feeling of being in the store, it doesn’t seem like it changed at all. If I am looking for appliances, I still trust Kenmore. If I am looking for power tools, I still trust Craftsmen. Now, the one thing that did seemingly change is the clothing department, they actually have some cool stuff there, including some great styles from LL Cool J, who has also put together this good video as part of the grant a wish campaign.
In short, we had some really tough challenges which shows why programs such as this one being run by Izea are risky for companies to pursue, but also invaluable if handled well. I still haven’t seen them engaged in the kerfuffle with Chris Brogan this weekend though… Further, campaigns such as this expose the real shortcomings of the end to end branding experience and how important it is for all different groups within a company to work together. Finally, it proves once again that marketing alone cant solve a company’s problems with its’ market relationships. Hopefully though, this is a learning opportunity and not a censorship opportunity.
To summarize, here are the problems we faced:
Some Positives:
I can’t say I will be running back into our local Sears store anytime soon, but I am happy to see Sears engaging. Unfortunately, the campaign really is a great lesson that a fresh coat of paint and a great pitch can’t change the brand by itself. It takes a complete retooling of the operations first and foremost, then to change the attitudes of the work force in order to change the product itself before you can make people feel different about your company. From the choice of flooring, to shelving, to hiring practices, to motivation, to inventory selection, everything is permanently inter-linked. One weak link may be overlooked, but several kills you and your opportunity to develop a meaningful relationship.
Perhaps I am just not the target customer that Sears is reaching for. Are you?
I wish to extend my thanks to Sears, and to IZEA, for inviting me to get involved in this program. As I have said for a long time to my clients (as a consultant), its not so much that people have negative things to say about your company insomuch as it is how you respond – what you say and do as a result. So in light of the relatively positive experiences posted around the K-Mart campaign, I am interested in seeing what happens as a result of this post. Is it a learning opportunity or is it time for corporate speak and a blind eye?
Now for the Fun Bit – Let me (and Izea) Grant Your Wish
I have selected a great package for you for feeding the mind, body and soul, or you can ignore my shopping choices (and the time I put into assembling the package) and pick your own item #’s from sears.com and include that in the comments below or your own blog post. Please do read the rules completely as I am not in charge of the contest, Izea is, but here is a general overview of how it will work.
Readers can enter via blog comment, tweet or blog post.
Blog Comment: A reader can leave a comment on this blog with the name of the wish package they would like to win. (I only made one, so its either the mind/body/soul wish or your own wish.
Twitter Tweet:
A reader can simply tweet out the following message:
“RT @chrisheuer, please grant my wish to win the #Sears XYZ package – tweet to win your own wish http://urlbrief.com/73ce6d” – replace XYZ with Mind/Body/Soul or Media or Gamers or My OwnBlog Post:
A blogger can enter by writing a post about the contest and linking back to your post. Be sure to leave a comment with the URL to their post as trackbacks don’t always work. Each tweet, comment or post counts as one registration. A person can register up to three times by tweeting, leaving a comment and doing a post on their own blog. The winner will be chosen at random by IZEA based on all entries. The contests are separate, each blogger participating in this promotion will have their own package to give away.
If readers don’t want to win the specific package I selected you can put together your own Wish package by leaving the package item#s from sears.com in the comments (up to $500) in value.
The Mind/Body/Soul Package
Some Further Thoughts
So you may think this post was paid for by Sears, and indeed it was – but in my mind they didn’t pay for me to post this (would you pay for a review like this?) but they paid me for my time (and underpaid me at that as I sit here at 5am completing the post after spending several hours in the store, browsing the online store and reviewing program details for compliance). In short, it feels more like a mystery shopper program with complete transparency, coupled with a giveaway. Its not about getting paid to promote them so much as it is getting paid to invest my time interacting with their brand and then sharing my experiences with you.
The original issues people had with the notion of getting paid to blog about a company had two main points: 1 transparency of transaction and intention – make it clear what you got paid and what you got paid for; 2 perceived lack of objectivity – in that people believe that honesty goes out the window when someone gives you something, which just isn’t the case for everyone, while it may be for some. I believe that this post adequately addresses those issues and believe you will find that to also be the case, though your opinion of such programs may not change as a result. Regardless, I learned a lot so far, and expect to learn a lot more this week as I hear your feedback.
Best of luck – I hope you win and I hope you enjoy one of the packages I selected for you.
Oh yeah, and just in case the title wasn’t clear enough, I received a $500 gift card to shop at the store, share my experience and give you a chance to win $500 wish too.

My wish is for the Sony eBook – Sears item# 00372493000.
Thanks!
Sears Customer Service has gone down like most retailers. I grew up with Sears just because my dad worked for them and so we had everything from Sears. The last two times we were at Sears for major purchases (appliances) we were not happy with how we were treated at all.
I like the media package.
Chris, I love this comment you make that is epitomized by the Sears campaign (and, frankly, many many other corporate social media marketing campaigns): "marketing alone cant solve a company’s problems with its’ market relationships." I cannot tell you what heavy lifting it is to change an entire culture and/or company. Outsourcing, competing for internal resources, historical political silos, etc. all contribute to a missing cohesion needed to overhaul a company into one that is not only aware of each customer touch point but motivated to make it the most positive experience ever. Sigh..my holiday wish is that I had the elixir to change that and I could include it in the free coffee and soda provided here.
I added a bit more on the 'mystery shopper' aspect of it from my viewpoint at http://kristiewells.com/archives/463
Chris, see you tonight @ SMCSF!
I'll share with you the same comment I made to Chris Brogan: My problem with this “marketing campaign” is the instructions for people to spam their friends with the Twitter reTweets.
Measure traffic to your blog post. Measure traffic to Kmart and Sears. But don’t encourage people to spam.
My message to @TedMurphy: http://twitter.com/SocialJulio/status/1059044739
Images: http://cli.gs/KmartSpam
and http://cli.gs/SearsSpam
In fact, asking me to do this excessively is not appropriate – I won't
be overly promoting that people tweet/blog/comment to enter as I feel
my part of the 'job' is really done. I agree that this is when it
gets problematic, though I also read some overly profuse posts which
made me feel a bit sickly to my stomach as they were simply creative
ads.
The tracking/entry mechanism is in the URL, so we will see how it
works or doesn't.
Will definitely be talking about this a bit tonight as well.
Chris, great post and I think a very interesting experiment. I'd love to see a follow up with comments from Sears on what they thought about the whole thing.
I'd like the Media package.
I am not afraid to say that I shop at Sears a few times a year. They have cool, reasonably prices clothes for kids, including a decent shoe collection. Maybe Sears could work on spotlighting what it really does well — kids clothes, tools and equipment for the garage. I'd say they have decent appliances, too…and vacuums. Oh my! I see they actually are useful to me in many ways.
Ken, I agree completely – I do think of Sears as the go to place for appliances and the power tool department is quite impressive. they are just not top of mind when I think of shopping for my clothes or for games for the kids.
I would love to see Sears invest heavily in a couple key items they do really well, and back off trying to be the *everything* to everyone store as I don't think they can truly compete in this marketplace.
It would also be interesting to poll shoppers to find out what they came in for…and what they actually left with to get a better sense of their needs and how well Sears does to satisfy them – then focus, focus, focus.
great post, thx for the info! The mind, body and soul package is great! I live away from home, adn those are things me and my mom or me and my best friend could look at together. I'm also in law school so they will be a ncie distraction form my studies!!
Great campaign, loving all the big social names getting behind IZEA!
Oh yeah, and if I win, I want The Media package. So much stuff I didn't know I wanted until I saw it on your list!
This has been an interesting thread through several blogs, including mine. More fun to watch than to be in perhaps? All in all, I think it's a win for Izea. They got loads of press and market research. For Sears and K-Mart? Mebbe not so much. For me? Well, the media package looks sweet!

Wow, seems like one heck of an aggravating experience. I enjoyed reading your honest review though. I would be delighted to be considered for the gaming package, would be an amazing gift to my son and my husband too! Have a good day, and happy holidays!
I would choose the gamers package,I dont have anything like this an I keep foster children an they would love something like this to play with, thanks
Definitely an interested conversation. I think your post rings true because you pointed out the negatives and the positives of your experience at Sears. So thanks for your honest impressions.
If I win, I'd want the Gamers package
Retail is suffering for reasons beyond the economy. Brick and mortar stores need to step it up to keep from losing everything to their online competition. Who wants to go stand in line and deal with disinterested salespeople when they can stay home and buy online.
I would like to be entered for the Gamers package, please! Happy Holidays!

I also still thnk of Sears as the go-to place for appliances, tools and outdoor equipment. I have to admit though, that I've bought all three at other retailers in the past three years. The conversation is great though!
The Media package would be a big hit at my house.
Oh, I would definitely go for the Gamer's Package. I really want to have a game system here at my house for the grandkids. They would think that would be the ultimate! Thanks for the giveaway. Sears is great!!
I'd like to the win the media package. I would love to win an iPod for my husband.
I also blogged about it http://yourethebossbrandice.com/2008/12/i-entered…
Thanks for the honest review! If selected, I'd take the Media package. I definitely need a video camera for my business (and future babies) and my husband could use the iPod for work.
I'd love the Sears Media Package. Generous giveaway!
Thanks for your candid remarks. I think you did a fine job balancing promotion and personal integrity.
Interesting reading – thanks for covering the good and the bad. We'd love the Media package. Here's hoping!
The Gamers Package for me.
This was an honest review and what I prefer to read..I want to know the "suck" and judge for myself if that's something I want to deal with or not. Thank you for a "real" review.

What a great post..Very interesting.. After reading I would go for the wonderful media Package. They all sound great! Thanks for the fantastic giveaway!
Media Package
I read all of your post and cannot agree more with alot of what you said. I am from South Florida and have been to the same store before (well thankfully not right before Christmas) and it hasn't changed in years. The media package would get my wish. But like your wife I want a karaoke machine and would do my shopping on-line the store is too crowded and understocked with things I want.
Thanks for the contest.
I would choose the gamer's package for my fiance.
The Media Package would be great
Dear Chris,
I want so badly to win #3 the Gamers Package for my son! Thank you and have a wonderful Christmas!
I would like to win the mind/body/soul package. I need to get myself back in shape and this would really help.

My wish is for the media package. Thank you.
"Even the Christmas yard decorations setup felt a bit less then modern. I guess the best word to describe it is that it felt ‘dated'."
I couldn't agree more. Sears has the exact same feel today that it did 40 years ago, and that isn't a good thing.
I would love the media package!
my wish is for the The Gamers Package
I would like the Media Package. I've had very similiar experiences in Sears as you did, but I'm hoping maybe they can get a facelift. I'm hearing their name more and more these days and that has to be good.

The Media Package…
although I have no choice in the matter really. My roommate is making me post this under duress. At this very moment he has my little cat Fluffy dangling over a roaring pit of flames that he dug in the backyard. He can't do the dishes but he has time to dig out an 8x8x8 Pit o' Doom. Go figure.
Thanks for the hard work. The gamers package would be great
Nice Contest, I would like to win the Gamers Package.

While your packages are lovely, they don't meet our immediate needs. No question here! My Christmas wish is to have a car where a car (or two!) can actually be parked
Sears is great for garage organization supplies, so here's my wish:
2 of these: Racor Pro Ceiling Mount Bike Rack Sears item #00959535000
2 of these: Racor Pro Heavy Lift Storage System Sears item #00959537000

Yes, yes, yes…that'd do it!
I'd really like to win the media package. I'm sorry your experience was less than wonderful. My local Sears store is great!
I would have to get the Gamer prize pakage. All my nephews Games where stolen I would help him replace his games.
Wow, I'm truly appreciative of your candor with your experience. So many blogs have become a cog in the corporate ad wheel and usually forego honesty anymore to kiss …… well you know….. I would choose the gamers package as I haven't owned a gaming system since my Atari 2400! I must be lucky in that regard, my local Sears is a great place to shop, and yes I mean beyond the electronics. One of my favorite jewelry sets lavendar jade ring, earrings, pendant came from Sears, I love the sportswear section and usually like to get my jeans there too. I have a wishlist on there a mile long. I will admit I shop mostly online now, but was sorry to hear your experience wasn't so great. But I can relate to what you mean, I have two 'big name' retailers near me that I refuse to pass by there nevertheless shop there!
Your shopping experience reminds me of when I used to go shopping at Sears with my grandparents……I think the sameness is comfortable for many people.
I'd choose the media package…..sounds like a great wish, to me.
Happy Holidays!

I'd like a Nikon D60 (Sears item #00353118000). I realize this is $50 over the $500 and I will gladly pay the difference if the price has not gone down to that level by the time this is over. I share your frustration at shopping at Sears, although at least around here the staff speaks English.
Would love to win the gamers package so I can challenge the grand kids!!
I'd be remiss for the kids if i didn't wish for the gamers package
the media and the mind body soul package are both wonderful. Of course what I want more than anything from Sears is a new sewing machine, mine broke beyond repair. I inherited it from my Mom so it did well for a 50 year old machine. This one would be wonderful

I’d choose the Gamer’s Package. I have been wanting a PS3 for a long time now. I’ve been waiting for the price to come down, and so far, that hasn’t really happened. The last console I bought was back when I was a kid – A Sega Dreamcast, 1999.
It would be a dream come true to win something like this.
Thank you, and Sears, for doing this

Also – it's normal to expect compensation in exchange for work – normal people get that, so don't worry about it.
The Media package sounds awesome Thanks
Got here via Kristie's post about the shopping experience. It's an interesting project, and while I don't have any qualms about social media people being involved with a promotion like this, I'm still not sure that I grok the overall structure.
But hey, I'm game for entering a contest! I'd love the media package.
I'm really glad I got directed to this blog. It was a pleasure reading this review and I am excited to go and read previous posts. I wish for the Media Package.

What a nice contest. I would chose the Media contest. I would love to have a camera.
Media Package! ^_^
i would like to have the gamers packagem it would make me a popular grammy
Chris, you did an amazing write up that I find incredibly balanced. The campaign in its entirety has interesting implications for our industry. It would be most interesting to hear from Sears candidly. What were their expectations? Was it a blind attempt at creating something viral or a genuine exploration into discovering what Sears is lacking?
In relation to Sears itself and big brands in general, I find it all too common that marketing (or an agency) is tasked to create something inspiring like the grant a wish campaign, but the glossy copy just makes the reality that much more disappointing.
Should I be selected the media package actually sounds pretty nifty. I don't shop at Sears (because it has always felt dated), so I wasn't even aware they carried those products.
media package
The Gamers Package, my Family would flip if I won this for them. Still using the old systems whenever we do play, but the PS3 is something they have all been bugging me to get for them.
The Gamers Package
The Media Package would be my pick. I've been unhappy with Sear's ever since I tried to leave a negative feedback on one of their items because if was not as advertised. Guess which review never showed on their site.
Mind/Body and soul package
Media package – no question. My iPod is old and I wish it had more memory.
#2: The Media Package
I would love the Gamers Package for my brother-in-laws
I'd love the Media package. I've always wanted an ipod
I like The Gamers Package. Thank you.
I would pick the Gamer's Package for my son…his girlfriend stepped on his PS2!
The Gamer's Package!
Thanks for the great contest! I'd love to enter for Sears item #00624755000 (ProForm XP Weight Loss 620 Treadmill – $499.88).
Since I do quality control for a living. None of this surprises me. I am however, sorry that you had this happen while you were suppose to be fullfilling a " wish". It doesn't sound as magical when you preface it with the descriptions you did. Hopefully, someone from Sears will read it.
I think if I was to pick one of the packs for a prize it would be the
Media Package…
Have a Merry Christmas and thanks for reading
Kristen
i'd love to enter for the gamers or media package
I think the gamers package is sweet!! I haven't shopped at sears in forever. I think their customer sucks!! The people I know that work/worked their say the only thing the company is worried about it getting credit card applications and warranties and not really concerned about the customers need. I have heard many many many Sears horror stories. Thanks for pointing out the good and the bad.
I am all about keep the mind/body and soul rejuvenated and in sync so I would love to win the Mind/Body/Soul Package! What a fantastic way to start the New Year off this would be! Thank you for the opportunity to enter! Happy Holidays to everyone!
I Twittered about your wonderful giveaway too! Here is a link to my Tweet:

The Media Package looks great
I am sorry that you had such a bad experience at Sears, but kudos to you for being so honest about it. I agree that Sears is great for tools and appliances, but that is about all I will shop for there. They definitely need to look at some serious remodeling too. The Gamers Package would be my pick!
sherri419 at gmail dot com
I'd love the gamers package!
While I appreciate the time and energy you put into choosing great packages, my current situation leads me to request tires for my car.
So I'd choose: 4 Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires
Sears item# 09579844000 Mfr. model# 79844
($124.44 per tire)
Good, honest review! I shop Sears sometimes they do have great kids clothes and some nice shoe bargains sometimes. And, of course, the tools. They really do exchange them forever, if they break! My hubby bent a 15 year old craftsman wrench trying to loosen a bolt and Sears exchanged it for a shiny new one, no problem! Anyway, we'd like the Media Package if I win. Crossing fingers…
Media package
I would like to win the The Media Package. It was interesting reading your blog post on Sears.
Gamers Package, please.
I would pick the gamers package, the whole family could have fun together with that and I would buy the Sunbeam 12 speed mixer Sears item # 00866450000 for my mother in law, hers just died, and I would buy me a new pair of slippers Dearfoams suede slippers Sears item # 07511235004
Thank you for your honest opinion, it is nice to see someone not afraid to speak the truth. If i am a winner i would love the gamers pack for my son and husband. thanks
I do appreciate your view and you absolute honesty in this post. I can't say that I have had the same experience with Sears. We had some poor customer service after buying a water heater there, but that is a totally different vent
. For the most part I can find some really wonderful deals on clothes for my sons (I shop goodwill 99 cent kids clothes day for my 4 yr old daughter, but boys must be too hard on their clothes because there is never anything decent there for them so I am forced to shop retail). Their clothes seem to stand up to the wear and tear my middle'un puts his clothes through and for me that is a huge plus. If I were to win one of these gift certificate/prize packages and I was able to choose I would choose the Nikon D60 camera. I know it is not the very top of the line, but it is better than what I have and I am wanting to start taking newborn photos for our local pregnancy crisis center and this camera would definitely do the job (it just isn't in our budget…and likely won't be any time in the foreseeable future). I would also like to do some photography for pay to help my husband keep our family finances a little more stable (he works 12+ hours a day and we can barely keep our family above water).
Once again I thank you for your honesty and forthcoming concerning your experience. It is nice to see that even though your experience was not the best, that you gave a fair "pros/cons" type list.
I tweeted it… http://twitter.com/fantacydawn/status/1068408525
I blogged about this…
http://hillbillysweetpea.blogspot.com/2008/12/hop…
I need serenity now so I pick the mind/body soul package!
I did a post on my blog http://blessedbarnharts.blogspot.com/2008/12/sear…
First of all I tried to enter the other day and my comment wouldn't seem to post. I can't find it so I am entering again, please don't disqualify me!
I would really like:
Mirus Intel Atom 270, 10.2", 1GB, 120GB, 802.11G, Webcam, 2.8lbs, Windows XP Home
Sears item# 00398573000 Mfr. model# SEAJBKX
that is currently priced at $449.00
I actually like my local Sears store, I am sure they vary by location. I will be going back to Sears for new appliances when I can afford to. I have some other brands that I would definitely not purchase again.
Media Package is great
I'd love to win The Gamers Package!
I would love to win the gamers package. I have been wanting a PS 3 for a while.
I pretty much agree with your assessment of sears. I just go there to see if they have something that I can't find anywhere else and their auto center has always been good. It is often hard to find employees, and their prices are high. I actually went there last fathers day to look for a watch and they had signs all over the place saying 60% off of all watches. Of course, you had to be right on top of the sign to read the fine print that said "when you use your sears credit card". So no sears credit card, no sale price.
When Kmart bought out Sears, I was hoping both companies would improve, but it looks like both will probably not be around much longer.
Media Package for me.
We need the media package
The Media Package is a sweet prize! Thanks for the chance to win.
i would love the The Mind/Body/Soul Package having been ill and down for quite awhile, i am now seriously working to get healthy and am up and about. this would help so much
The meida Package looks awesome.
I grew up on Sears, initialing my choices in the Christmas Wish Book for Santa was a holiday tradition.
The Sears catalog is an American Institution in itself. I support Sears for the efforts to the American people and our American Soldiers. The good they do for others makes up for the few inconveniences we sometimes suffer with service.
For my household it would have to be the "Media Package". I'm really bummed this Christmas that so many have to take the "give" out of it. I'm making more homemade gifts and donating time to charitys to help take my mind off how depressing it's been for some.
I would choose the Media Package. Thanks.
The Sears in my area only has appliances and lawn mowers. Generally when we need appliances we go to Lowe's. When we go to a larger city w/a larger Sears we usually browse through, but, honestly, it's been years since I made any large purchases at Sears. Thanks for the contest. I'd like the media package.
I want the The Gamers Package please!
Enjoyed reading about your trip, sounds similar to my Sears experiences. I'd love to have the Mind/Body/Soul package. Thanks for the giveaway!
I would love the game's package. Thanks for offering this giveaway.
I'd love the Media Package — please and thank you!
The Gamers Package would be great. Thanks!
wow 205 comments! I was just sending these all in to a separate folder, but it looks like I need to read through this all and respond to a few folks at some time over the weekend…

Canon PowerShot SX10 IS 10.0MP Digital Camera – Sears item# 00353478000
Smartparts 8.0in. Digital Picture Frame
Sears item# 00354910000
I would love the gamers PS3 pack. Youngest son moved out several months ago. At the time i helped him pack and move, i did not realize he owned the only game systems.
I enjoyed reading your experience with Sears. Our local Sears is pretty much the same as yours. Seems to be common place with them. I rarely shop Sears and when I do it's b/c they are having their 97 cent clearance sale. lol Get some great deals if you get there at the right time. I do think they have a nice selection of the outdoor christmas displays.
Their prices are a bit higher than most places and their price match policy either needs reviewed or my local store managers don't really care about their customers.
I hope that Sears will be reviewing your feedback as well as other comments. I wander in there from time to time, but don't care for the cramped and unorganized store that we have. Now that I have added my two cents, I would love to win the package you choose.
Have a Merry Christmas.
I would choose the gamers package. THank you

Thank you for an honest review. I'd probably choose to get a treadmill, item #00624803000 .
The Mind/Body/Soul Package is great.
I would like to enter for the Gamer's Package. This will be a huge surprise for my nephew, and I'm sure the rest of the family will enjoy it too. You are right, Sears is taking an interesting risk by allowing such candid reviews, but hopefully they will learn from your bad experience and improve their stores. Thank you for the opportunity to win. Happy holidays.
The mind/body/soul package sounds perfect to me!
I like the Media Package. Great article, honest.
I'd love the Sears Gamers Package. Thanks.
I would love to win Wish #2, the Media Package!

I would choose the Media package. We love to shop at Sears for linens, kitchen items, clothes, and my husband likes their tools.
That was very interesting reading about Sears. I think so many stores these days have gotten so big, they've really forgotten about the people that made them that way. It's very difficult to find sales people to help, that are courteous and knowledgeable.
Thanks for the contest, I would pick the gamer's package.
I would be so grateful to win a Sears Gift Card. I put together my own package I'd love to win – a Garden Makeover! Spring would be so awesome with these great products.

WOW interesting comments. I applaud you for being truthful and honest with your recent shopping experience. Although I have to say I love Sears. At least the Sears in my neck of the woods – have never had a problem finding what I was looking for, and shop there frequently for clothes and many different items besides electronics and tools. Maybe it depends on the area your in? Don't know but I like them.

Thanks for the interesting read tonight. Showing not only the pros, but the cons of your shopping experience. The Media Package sounds great!
I would love the media or the gamers package. And a comment… I love the fact that Sears is trying to revamp it's image, I'll agree that I hadn't been to Sears in years, and recently visited one near my home to look for a dishwasher. I will say that not all Sears stores are like the one you visited, an associate approached us within a few minutes of our entrance, spent the time to answer our questions, and found another associate to answer a question for me at another department. I'll agree with you that you do need to be careful with their prices, they do play a very confusing game, but if you know what to look for, you can get some great deals. Thanks for letting me write my mind on this and I enjoyed your blog!
I'd choose the media package. And I enjoyed your blog.

I used to shop at Sears until their customer service went down the tubes. They bought our local K-Mart but you can't use a Sears gift card at K-Mart if that makes sense. Sears does have a great selection of tools and lawn care items and I still make purchases from them for those items but I pass on their poor quality selection of clothes. I did find a great Delonghi Retro Panini Maker that's been on my "I Want" list forver but just can't justify spending $100.80 on it.
I would love to win the great media package.
Thanks for your nice article and the fantastic giveaway. It must be fun getting to play Santa Claus.
Meh, While I'd love to win the media (or gamers) package, Sears is not my favorite place and hasn't been since my parents divorce and they wouldn't extend my mom credit even though she made more than most men at that time.
Reading about your experiences it doesn't appear that they have come all that far from the stone age if at all. Sorry.
While I think it is nice they want to grant wishes and would not be adverse to winning- I'd love to, in fact, well, I don't think I'll be making a special trip to see what I've been missing.
I twittered this as dddiva.

Please include me. I twittered and I am commenting here. I was trying to generate the energy to do a blog post but I am coming off of 4 days of Christmas events. Feeling a bit lethargic. Anyway, I would be thrilled with the Media Package!!!
By the way, I love your integral review! You expressed my own sentiments about Sears — good and bad — and I think Sears needs to upgrade their image while retaining old fashioned values.
When I go to a beautiful home, no matter how lavish, it is the hospitality that I remember. Likewise, the customer service is always foremost to me in any retail setting. I am so weary of being ignored, listening to cashiers talk to one another about employees or their personal lives, or receiving apathetic attention.
And, don't get me started with the language barriers. We live in an English speaking country. I'm all for diversity. However, in virtually any form of customer service, I am plagued with repeating myself and asking an absurd amount of questions to obtain what I need. Many just shake their heads at me and I need to hunt down someone else. If employers care about their shoppers, then ensure that the communication is effective and concise.
Thanks again!
KJ

My Wish is for the Media Package – Thank you for the opportunity!

Sears Grants a Wish featured on my blog:
http://alwaysknitalways.blogspot.com/2008/12/sear…
I appreciate the honest review. To be fair, Aventura Sears is probably the worst Sears out there. It hasn't been updated in years, while the rest of the mall has gone very fashionable. We go to Sears for things like school uniforms and tools, but they need to offer more, I think. Anyway, I'd love to enter for the The Gamers Package.
Always shop there for appliances. Can't say a lot about other departments.
Would love the media package
I chose The Gamers Package for my children because they have been begging for a PS3 but it's just not in the budget.
Thank you very much for the great giveaway and the opportunity to win this for my kids.

I think your mind body and soul package is pretty significant. Indeed it includes one of my favorite books, The four Agreements. Another book I see it includes is A new Earth which I just finished reading the other day. I think the media package is pretty awsome too.

I would love the media package for my husband who has just returned from Afghanistan where he served with the Army. He is not only the best husband and dad but also the best friend I could ever ask for.
I would have chosen the Media package, but after a recent ice storm where I was without power for 8 days and my tv blew up my wishlist is now for a tv. I love the Vizio 32 in. (Diagonal) Class LCD HDTV Sears item# 05771378000 Mfr. model# VW32LHDTV10A Thanks for the opportunity.
I think I like the Gamers Package best.
My favorite package is The Gamer's Package. I shop at Sears regularly and have had "hit or miss" service with them – great for appliances, not so good for special orders (just try finding an employee in that section of the store!) and such.
Good luck finding a Wii in stock at a good price somewhere – I'm lucky enough to have gotten a console, but I've been on the hunt for a Wii Fit and wow, that's pretty hard to find this year. Nintendo has a tough time keeping up with demand!
I'd love to win the gamers package!!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I also twittered it!!

The media package rocks, Interesting post on customer service, some companies think that to save money the first thing they cut is CS, either by outsoursing, hiring new and lower payed employees. They don't realise that it is good CS that will keep a customer coming back even in tough times
I'd love the media package. I'd give the ipod to my son and keep the camcorder for myself. I like to take photos and video of my kids. Thanks for the chance.

thank you!
It's been interesting to read about the difference experiences at Sears stores across the country. You found awful customer service; another blogger reported a terrific experience. I find the same thing from store to store in my town, and even within the same business, one person can be terrific and another apathetic.
Anyway, I created my own wish list, a bit of "his 'n' hers."
400 TC Supima No-iron Sheet Sets, Sears Item # 09655826004
Craftsman 12 Amp Edger, Sears Item # 07179653000
DVD Camcorder, Handycam, Sears Item # 00356058000

[...] Before I get any further into the meaning of the results, I need to do a better job of setting the stage, from the beginning. You see, it’s been on my mind a lot lately that I really do have enough stuff. That the all out feeding frenzy at the buffet of consumerism is perhaps coming to an end. Many retailers are going to be really hurt as we have seen already with Circuit City, Mervyns and Macy’s among the first to experience the hardships. Now this is especially going to be true for those retailers who aren’t using ecommerce effectively (as you may have seen in my brick and mortar review, shopping at the mall isn’t what it used to be).
